Batata Kees is a hearty and easy to make item during fasting. In Maharashtra, whenever we had puja at home or fasting days wherein certain food items are eaten, Batata Kees or Kiss was one of the top items on the menu.

The key ingredients are Potatoes and Peanuts. Both have a wide variety of health benefits as below :

Potatoes:

  1. Nutrient-rich: Potatoes are a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin B6.
  2. High in fiber: The skin of potatoes is particularly rich in dietary fiber, which aids digestion and promotes a feeling of fullness.
  3. Heart-healthy: Potatoes contain compounds like flavonoids that may help lower the risk of heart disease by reducing inflammation and improving blood pressure.
  4. Good for digestion: The high fiber content in potatoes helps regulate bowel movements and prevents constipation.
  5. Energy boost: Potatoes are a good source of complex carbohydrates, providing sustained energy throughout the day.

Peanuts:

  1. Good source of protein: Peanuts are an excellent plant-based source of protein, making them beneficial for vegetarians and vegans.
  2. Heart-healthy fats: Peanuts contain monounsaturated fats that can help lower bad cholesterol levels (LDL) while increasing good cholesterol (HDL).
  3. Rich in antioxidants: Peanuts are rich in antioxidants such as resveratrol, which has anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease or cancer. 4.Improves brain function : Peanuts also contain nutrients such as vitamin E, folate, and niacin that support brain health and cognitive function.

Potatoes oxidize quick and hence if you are making a larger quantity, then once you grate the potatoes, keep them submersed in water with little salt. This will avoid potatoes turning dark due to oxidization.
  4. Grind the roasted and shelled peanuts to make coarse powder. Do note that we do not need super fine powder as we need the crunchy bite of peanuts and the flavor. Stir the potatoes for few times and cook for about 4 - 6 minutes
